Valentine’s Day Floral Trends That Say It All
At Regina Gust Designs, we believe that flowers have the power to elevate important moments in your life, making them truly unforgettable. This is even more so the case with Valentine’s Day which, traditionally, embodies the affection we feel for our loved ones.
Celebrated on February 14th, Valentine’s Day occurs when most of the country is still experiencing winter, even with snow and ice. Although there are only a limited number of flowers in season, your choice is not necessarily limited to only winter blooms.
A Little History of Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day, although it embodies the celebration of love, has a somewhat somber history. According to legend, a Catholic priest named Valentine was beheaded on February 14 for performing weddings in defiance of Emperor Claudius II’s decree that soldiers were not allowed to marry. Valentine’s Day is since celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial—which probably occurred around A.D. 270.
Valentine greetings were popular as far back as the Middle Ages, though written Valentine cards didn’t begin to appear until after 1400. The oldest known Valentine still in existence today is a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London.
Yet, most prefer the modern-day meaning of Valentine’s Day! Today, Valentine’s Day celebrates love and affection for those who are near and dear to us.
Traditional Valentine’s Day Flowers
Red roses symbolize passionate love and are a favorite for Valentine’s Day. Other beautiful Valentine’s Day flowers are Lilies, Tulips, Gerbera Daisies, Hydrangea and Orchids.
While red is the color of choice for typical Valentine’s bouquets, other colors are equally enchanting, such as pinks, oranges, purples, and whites. There are hundreds of colors to choose from — the choices are endless and it’s easier than ever to select a rose that is as unique as your loved one.
Different Choices for Different People
It has been found that the choice of Valentine’s flowers depends largely on who will receive them. Red roses are still the classic choice for men sending flowers to the woman they love. Yet, flowers for a family member may be more neutral, such as soft or vibrant colors for mom, depending on her personality.
A lovely mix of blooms, such as lilies, spray roses, alstroemeria, and gerberas with beautiful foliage for texture and contrast is a great choice for grandma. Lastly, your sister may just love a sweet, pastel-colored bouquet of freesia and spray roses.
On another note, sending flowers to the man you love may be challenging if you don’t want to go the roses route. Some great choices include bold colors, with Succulents, Terrariums, Proteas, or Birds of Paradise paired with orange carnations and purple statice.
When to Surprise Your Loved One?
Typically, Valentine’s Day is a very busy time for most florists, and leaving it to the last moment may end you up either empty-handed or with a second-rate choice. It’s therefore wise to order your Valentine’s bouquets early. The earlier you order, the more options you will have. You can use options such as same-day delivery or you can even have them delivered a bit earlier as a lovely surprise.
